Vocational training
Helping the orphans through vocational training
Many of the orphans, when they came to our children home, did not have the benefit of receiving proper education. Because of their poor education background and the lack of discipline, some had find it very difficult to catch up in their studies in school despite the help we have given them. Whilst we are proud to say that a few of our children were able to get into Universities, most of them would have to pursue their studies in vocational schools. This will enable them to continue their studies rather than to starting working at a very young age.
The vocational training will also help them to build confidence and to find a job that can support themselves when they graduate. We see vocational training as an important part of helping our children to integrate into society and be independent.
We will help the children to find vocational school according to their interest and ability. Usually, upon finishing the junior high school, the children can go to a 2 to 3 years vocational course. If they do well, they can apply for admission to one of the vocational universities to complete a degree.
The vocational study will consist of on the job training. This will usually take the form of a placement to a commercial organisation. After the training, they can find a job and start to be independent. We hope that through helping these children to earn their own living, they will learn to support their younger brothers and sisters by contributing to the future vocational training fund.
The costs per year for vocational training is about RMB 8000, depending on the school and the course.
By way of example, Mark Guan was still in primary 5 when he was about 17. He had lost interest in study and he was unable to advance in his study. Not surprisingly, he got very frustrated and this has manifested in the way he misbehaved in the children home. He did not relate well with others and was a trouble maker. Essentially, he had lost direction in life. Having spoken to Mark, we decided to send him to vocational school where he studied culniary (which was his own choice). Within a year, we saw a marked improvement in Mark's attitude and behaviour. He found new purpose in life and he put a lot of effort in his studies. He did well in his culniary courses. He also related much better with other children. When he came back to the children home during weekends, he would go to the kitchen to help the chef to prepare meals. In 2009, Mark has started his placement at a very good restaurant in CPD Beijing working as the lowest ranking staff in the kitchen. He worked from 9am to 2 pm and then from 4pm to 10pm or even later in the evening. Sometimes, he also had to work overtime beyond those hours. Through the opportunity given to him, Mark has become a much more confident person and he is able to communicate properly with others. With the meager salary that he has, he has decided to help other orphans in need. Without the opportunity of going to vocational training, Mark's life would be very much different.
We hope that you would help these children in pursuing their education through vocational training so that they would be able to find a job and be a useful member of the society. Each teenager will be requested to complete an application form and an interview with our Orphanage teachers.
